Women In Waves

Belly Board, Body Board, World Body Board Championship, Women In WavesThis year, after living in North Devon for five years, I decided it is about time I got in the water as for too long I’ve been on the sidelines watching & waiting with a towel whilst my boys have fun.

The biggest hurdle for me would you believe was buying a wet suit, which was a lot easier than I thought, I went off with my girlfriend to Second Skin as Andy will alter the wet suit to fit, being 5 ft 2″ with large bosoms, off the peg isn’t an option!

The next step was to go in the water, I’ve always been an okay swimmer and quite confident in the water but really wanted to learn techniques for feeling competent enough in the sea, to go out a little bit deeper. Thankfully Women In Waves have provided a couple of sessions this summer and I managed to go on a course with them yesterday.

We started the day off with a tea and cake, always good in my book, and it was then straight into the water learning to wade, duck dive and body surf, all of which was great fun.

We then had a break for hot chocolate and cake, very important, then back into the water, this time it was all about swimming out back a totally different kettle of fish!

At all times I felt safe, especially as the trainer we had was James Hood who is a brilliant coach at Croyde Surf Lifesaving and when I’d reached my limit I was able to turn around and go back in. Afterwards, I felt like I’d really pushed my boundaries and had a real sense of being alive and I can now totally relate to the buzz people get from being in the sea.

After another break, back in the sea on paddle boards, not ever being on a board before I even found stopping on it a challenge! Once I’d sort of mastered this I managed to get out of the shallows and with the help of the trainer I caught some great waves in, a real thrill and I couldn’t  stop smiling.

An absolutely brilliant day, if they do another one I’ll definitely be going again and I now feel competent in the sea and am indeed a woman in waves! I might even go to Surf Mamas on Thursdays albeit on a body board!
